WOOP Model of Goal-Setting

WOOP is a goal-setting and mental contrasting framework developed by psychologist Gabriele Oettingen.

WOOP stands for Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, and Plan. This model is designed to help individuals set and achieve realistic goals by combining positive thinking with a realistic assessment of potential obstacles

Wish: – Identify a specific and meaningful wish or goal. This is what you want to achieve, and it should be something realistic and within your control.

Outcome: – Envision the positive outcomes or benefits associated with achieving your wish. Imagine how achieving the goal will make you feel and the positive impact it will have on your life.

Obstacle: – Consider the potential obstacles or challenges that may arise on the path to achieving your goal. It's essential to be realistic about potential barriers that could hinder your progress.

Plan: – Develop a concrete plan for how you will overcome the identified obstacles. Specify the actions you will take to address challenges and stay on track toward achieving your goal.

The process of mental contrasting—alternating between positive thoughts about achieving the goal and considering potential obstacles—helps individuals create a more realistic and strategic approach to goal-setting.
